We speak a lot about meaningful connections here’s something to mull over.

If the partner of a resident asked if they could sleep overnight with their partner on a regular basis would this be something that could happen in the care home with which you are connected and what would need to be considered/changed?

Any thoughts put into comments

I think it’s essential this is facilitated. These are quite often life partners with co dependencies. When the non resident spouse is already feeling the anticipatory grief of losing their loved one to whichever medical reason that required their admission, its important to keep their bond alive as long as possible. Why not use the human warmth and familiarity as a tool to reduce stress and anxieties as opposed to drugs or other interventions

    1. Would be keen to know if there are any homes that currently encourage/ support this approach

I have applied for a fund to create a space within an NHS dementia ward for this – it’s an NHS fund. I hope all care homes will endorse this in the near future

Comfort would be a huge consideration, but weighing the comfort of furniture with the comfort of being with a loved one intimately. Attitudes would need to change, not just in care homes but by all the bodies surrounding care homes that may feel the need to over complicate a simple right into protocols, procedures, hundred page guidances.

    1. Luckily this has yet to appear on a self evaluation framework yet. But I think you are correct about comfort when I think of our rooms over half would struggle to have enough space for any bed other than a single.

    2. i would love to do this but my home simply doesn’t have the space to facilitate this, nowhere to store a spare bed and most of our rooms wouldn’t fit an additional bed in it.
However I do think this is something that needs to be considered going forward, how we can provide this in a safe way while still ensuring the residents care needs are fulfilled. cost implications (of course). safety of other residents. if the staying visitor has a medical emergency where do we stand in looking after them. do we put an additional z-bed in the room or do we look at having a profiling double bed. All of the policies and procedures and guidance that would go with it.
Making sure staff understood the need or want to do this too. its sometimes hard to get folk to understand a loved one might want to help provide care or comfort or assistance with meals nevermind stay overnight!

      1. Have you seen the price of double size profile beds? Wow. The size of rooms is a real issue, though, as you point out

  3. Whatif we could have a shared space which could be supported that people go to for that purpose – rent the room style for as long or as short as you would like. But it’s a supported space with all relevant equipment if people need or want it. Is this something of the future?

    1. I’m wondering what this room would be called. But certainly a good idea
